5 Things You Will Start Seeing When Your Spiritual Eyes Open
There is more around you than what your natural eyes can see. The Bible is clear about this. There is a natural world, and there is a spiritual world. Most believers live their whole life seeing only the first one. But God wants to open your spiritual eyes. When your spiritual eyes open, your life changes. Fear loses its grip. The Bible comes alive. You start to see what God sees. In this post, you will learn 5 things you will start seeing when your spiritual eyes open. Each one is backed by Scripture. You will also learn how to ask God to open your eyes. What you will see when your spiritual eyes open:
- God’s protection around you
- Jesus in a new way
- Hidden treasure in the Word
- Your calling and inheritance
- The plans of the enemy
What Does It Mean to Have Your Spiritual Eyes Open?
Your spiritual eyes are not the eyes in your head. They are the eyes of your heart. Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus to have their spiritual eyes open:
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” Ephesians 1:18 (NASB 1995)
Why NASB here: the NKJV says “eyes of your understanding.” The oldest Greek manuscripts say “eyes of your heart” (kardia, Strong’s G2588). The NASB keeps that wording, so it is closer to what Paul wrote.
The word “enlightened” is phōtizō (Strong’s G5461). It means to give light, to make something shine so it can be seen. So having your spiritual eyes open means God turns on the light inside you. Then you can see what was always there. And it starts with the new birth. Jesus said:
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (NKJV)
No one gets their spiritual eyes open without Jesus. The new birth is the first door. After that, God keeps opening your eyes wider.
5 Things You Will Start Seeing When Your Spiritual Eyes Open
1. You Will See God’s Protection Around You
An enemy army once surrounded the city where the prophet Elisha lived. His servant woke up, looked out, and panicked. Elisha was calm. He said:
“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 2 Kings 6:16 (NKJV)
Then Elisha prayed one short prayer for his servant.
“And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:17 (NKJV)
Nothing changed on the mountain. The chariots of fire were there all along. What changed was the servant’s sight. When your spiritual eyes open, you stop seeing only the army against you. You start seeing the army that is for you.
2. You Will See Jesus in a New Way
After the resurrection, two disciples walked to a village called Emmaus. Jesus walked with them. But they did not know it was Him. Then He sat at their table and broke the bread.
“Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.” Luke 24:31 (NKJV)
The word “opened” here is dianoigō (Strong’s G1272). It means to open fully, all the way through. They had been walking with Jesus for miles. But they only knew Him when God opened their eyes. Many believers are like that. Jesus is with them, but they don’t see Him clearly. When your spiritual eyes open, Jesus becomes real to you. He is no longer just a name in a song. He becomes a Person you know. This is why Paul prayed for “the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him” (Ephesians 1:17, NKJV). Seeing Jesus clearly is the greatest thing open spiritual eyes can give you.
3. You Will See Hidden Treasure in the Word
The same Bible you have read for years will start to look different. David prayed for this:
“Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law.” Psalm 119:18 (NKJV)
The wonders were already in the Word. David needed his spiritual eyes open to see them. Jesus did the same for His disciples on the evening of the resurrection.
“And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” Luke 24:45 (NKJV)
When your spiritual eyes open, a verse you have read a hundred times will suddenly jump off the page. You will see Jesus in places you never noticed. The Word will stop being just words. It will become bread for your soul.
4. You Will See Your Calling and Inheritance
Look again at Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:18. He prayed this for a reason: “so that you will know what is the hope of His calling.” Many believers don’t know why they are here. They feel lost. They drift from one thing to the next. When your spiritual eyes open, you start to see God’s purpose for your life. You see what He called you to do. You see the riches He has stored up for you in Christ. Paul also wrote:
“…while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NKJV)
With open eyes, you stop judging your life by what you see today. You start living by what God has shown you about tomorrow.
5. You Will See the Plans of the Enemy
The king of Syria kept planning attacks on Israel. But every time he made a plan, Israel already knew. The king thought there was a spy in his camp. His servant told him the truth:
“None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” 2 Kings 6:12 (NKJV)
Elisha had his spiritual eyes open. He could see what the enemy was planning in secret. God does not want you blind to the devil’s tricks.
“…lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.” 2 Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV)
When your spiritual eyes open, you will sense when something is wrong. You will see the trap before you step into it. You will know how to pray before the attack comes. This kind of sight grows with practice.
“But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)
How to Get Your Spiritual Eyes Open
You cannot force your spiritual eyes open. God opens them. But the Bible shows you how to position yourself.
1. Ask God to open your eyes
Elisha prayed, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes.” David prayed, “Open my eyes.” Paul prayed for the eyes of the heart to be enlightened. Make these prayers your own. Pray them every day.
2. Keep your heart pure
“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 (NKJV)
Sin clouds your sight. Repent quickly. Keep your heart clean, and you will see more clearly.
3. Stay in the Word
The Word is the light that lets you see. Read it slowly. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what it means.
4. Let Jesus heal your sight
Jesus told a lukewarm church to come to Him for eye salve.
“…and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” Revelation 3:18 (NKJV)
Only Jesus can heal spiritual blindness. Run to Him, not to man-made methods.
A Warning for Anyone with Spiritual Eyes Open
Not everything you see in the spirit comes from God. You must test it.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1 (NKJV)
Here is how to stay safe with your spiritual eyes open:
- Test everything by the Word. God will never show you something that goes against Scripture.
- Keep your eyes on Jesus. The goal is to see Him, not to chase experiences.
- Stay humble and accountable. Share what you see with mature leaders.
