4 Warning Dreams God Uses to Protect You From Danger
Have you ever had a dream that felt like a warning? You woke up, and you could not shake it. Something in your spirit said, “Pay attention.” God still speaks through dreams. And some of the most important dreams He gives are warning dreams. Warning dreams are not sent to scare you. They are sent to protect you. God sees what is coming before it comes. Through these dreams, He lets you see it too. In this post, you will learn 4 warning dreams God uses to protect you from danger. Every one comes from the Bible. You will also learn how to respond. The 4 warning dreams at a glance:
- Dreams that tell you to leave
- Dreams that tell you to change direction
- Dreams that show you what is coming
- Dreams that stop you before you fall
Does God Really Send Warning Dreams?
Yes. God told Israel plainly that dreams are one of the ways He speaks.
“Then He said, ‘Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream.'” Numbers 12:6 (NKJV)
And the book of Job explains exactly why God sends warning dreams.
“In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds, Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction. In order to turn man from his deed, And conceal pride from man, He keeps back his soul from the Pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.” Job 33:15-18 (NKJV)
Read that again. God speaks in the night to keep your soul from the Pit and your life from the sword. That is the whole purpose of these dreams. They are God’s night-time protection. But Job also says this:
“For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it.” Job 33:14 (NKJV)
God speaks. The problem is that many people don’t notice. Let’s make sure you do.
4 Warning Dreams God Uses to Protect You From Danger
1. Warning Dreams That Tell You to Leave
Some warning dreams say one thing: get out. After Jesus was born, King Herod wanted Him dead. Joseph did not know. But God did.
“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, ‘Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.'” Matthew 2:13 (NKJV)
Look at how fast Joseph moved.
“When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt.” Matthew 2:14 (NKJV)
He did not wait for morning. He left that same night. Soon after, Herod’s soldiers killed the baby boys in Bethlehem. One dream saved the life of the Savior. Dreams like this may tell you to leave a place, a relationship, a job or a situation. When God says go, don’t argue. Go.
2. Warning Dreams That Tell You to Change Direction
Some warning dreams don’t tell you to run. They tell you to take another road. The wise men came from the East to worship Jesus. Herod told them to come back and report where the Child was. He said he wanted to worship Him too. It was a lie. God exposed it in a dream.
“Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.” Matthew 2:12 (NKJV)
The words “divinely warned” come from chrēmatizō (Strong’s G5537). It means to receive a message straight from God, like an official instruction from heaven. The wise men did not stop their journey. They just changed the route. Joseph had a dream like this too. When he was coming back from Egypt, he planned to go to Judea. But God redirected him.
“But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee.” Matthew 2:22 (NKJV)
Sometimes the goal is right but the road is wrong. These dreams show you the safe way to get where God is taking you.
3. Warning Dreams That Show You What Is Coming
Some warning dreams show you a storm before it arrives, so you can prepare. Pharaoh dreamed of seven fat cows eaten by seven thin cows. Then he dreamed of seven full heads of grain eaten by seven thin ones. No one could explain it until Joseph came.
“Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, ‘The dreams of Pharaoh are one; God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.'” Genesis 41:25 (NKJV)
Seven years of plenty were coming. Then seven years of famine. So Joseph gave a plan.
“Then that food shall be as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, that the land may not perish during the famine.” Genesis 41:36 (NKJV)
Notice the purpose: “that the land may not perish.” Those dreams saved a whole nation. They also saved Jacob’s family, the family that would carry the promise of the Messiah. Dreams like this don’t always mean danger is today. They may mean a hard season is coming. God shows you early so you can save, pray and get ready.
4. Warning Dreams That Stop You Before You Fall
Some warning dreams protect you from yourself. Abraham lied and said his wife Sarah was his sister. King Abimelech took Sarah into his house. He was about to sin without knowing it. God stepped in at night.
“But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, ‘Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.'” Genesis 20:3 (NKJV)
Then God explained what He had been doing.
“And God said to him in a dream, ‘Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.'” Genesis 20:6 (NKJV)
God used a dream to hold a man back from a step that would have destroyed him. This is what Job 33 meant: “to turn man from his deed.” Warning dreams can stop you from signing the wrong contract, marrying the wrong person or walking into a trap. God can even speak in dreams to the people who want to hurt you. When Laban chased Jacob in anger, God spoke to Laban first.
“But God had come to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, ‘Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad.'” Genesis 31:24 (NKJV)
Laban came angry. He left in peace. God had already dealt with him in the night.
What to Do When You Have Warning Dreams
A warning only protects you if you respond to it. Here is what to do.
1. Write it down
“Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.” Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV)
Keep a notebook by your bed. Dreams fade fast after you wake up.
2. Test it
Not every dream is from God. Some dreams come from a busy mind.
“For a dream comes through much activity…” Ecclesiastes 5:3 (NKJV)
“Test all things; hold fast what is good.” 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (NKJV)
Ask: Does this line up with the Word? Does it point me to God? Pray about it. Share it with a mature believer.
3. Pray over it
A warning is often a call to pray. What God shows you, you can pray against. Ask Him to cover you, your family and your plans.
4. Obey quickly
Joseph left “by night.” The wise men took “another way.” They did not delay. Now look at someone who ignored a warning. Pilate’s wife had a dream about Jesus.
“While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, ‘Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.'” Matthew 27:19 (NKJV)
Pilate heard the warning. He did not obey it. He is remembered for that choice to this day.
5. Don’t live in fear
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
These dreams are proof that God is watching over you. They should give you peace, not panic. Related reading: 5 Things You Will Start Seeing When Your Spiritual Eyes Open and 5 Signs Angels Are in Your House Right Now.
Questions About Warning Dreams
What are warning dreams from God?
Warning dreams are dreams God uses to protect you. They may tell you to leave, change direction, prepare for what is coming, or stop before a wrong step (Matthew 2:12-13; Genesis 41:25; Genesis 20:3).
How do I know if warning dreams are from God?
Test them by Scripture, pray over them, and share them with a mature believer. Not every dream is from God (Ecclesiastes 5:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:21).
What should I do after warning dreams?
Write the dream down, test it, pray over it, and obey quickly if it is from God. Don’t let it fill you with fear (Habakkuk 2:2; 2 Timothy 1:7).
Does God still send warning dreams today?
Yes. God said He speaks in dreams (Numbers 12:6), and Job 33:15-18 says He uses them to keep people from the Pit.
God Is Watching Over You Through Warning Dreams
God does not sleep. Even while you sleep, He is watching. He warned Joseph to leave. He warned the wise men to change course. He warned Pharaoh to prepare. He warned Abimelech to stop. He can do the same for you. So before you sleep tonight, pray: “Lord, speak to me in the night. Show me what I need to see. Keep me from every trap.” Then pay attention.
